A retail assistant manager or deputy store manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of a store/branch in the absence of the store manager in accordance with overall company policy.

The retail assistant manager or deputy store manager has responsibility for one major activity, under which many other sub-activities fall - that key activity being sound commercial management. As an assistant store manager drives the commercial performance of the store, action will be required in a number of other key retail store management activities. This may not be an exhaustive list but will include: day-to-day retail store operations, human resources (HR), recruitment, coaching, customer service, selling, administration, logistics & transport, product flow, merchandising, security and visual merchandising.
